I strained to think. For Mei, between children and herself, she had chosen children. For father, between the village and the city, he had chosen the city to feed his children rather than the village to suit himself. For mother, between life and death, she didn’t make a choice; she lived and died; but to her surprise, death seemed to have mercy on her and so had given her a second life for the sake of her children. As for Nan, between husband and lover, between love and hate, she couldn’t make up her mind nor could she balance her life, because she thought a woman should have what a man could have and a man should have what a woman could have; and most importantly, children.
